So I am laying here tonight, on the eve of the Puppy Up! Walk in Raleigh and I am wondering why cancer even exists.
It's only purpose is to hurt people and pets, anguish friends and family and
cause strife financially and emotionally. That is a pretty evil reason to
exist. I was at a cancer benefit a few weeks ago. My vet's sister in law was diagnosed
with metastasized breast cancer and they had no health insurance. I went to
help them raise some money so they can keep their small, humble home and the
utilities on while she is going through the treatment. I know she isn't the
only person in this world in this same situation, which makes me lay here and
wonder why cancer exists.

Mom and Dad have told me stories about the dogs they had before me and my sisters. I guess they had a 5 dog pack which was a blend of his and hers. Two fox terriers, a pit/lab mix, a german shepherd and a wolf/shepherd mix. They used to call them their "geriatric pack" since the youngest was 9 years old when they got together. Within 4
years they lost all of them, two to lymphoma, one to oesto sarcoma and two to
heart failure. (I know those are pretty big words for a dog, but they are very
scary words and I like to know who the enemy is.)

I am wondering and thinking about all those awesome people and pets that have been taken from this world and their families to cancer. It is a very sad thing indeed. I know you have been touched by losing someone you loved to cancer and it seems so cruel and senseless. So I am reflecting on all of this on the eve of a very exciting day
for my family. Tomorrow will come and I will meet lots of wonderful people and
dogs, get lots of love and lead them all on a 2 mile walk to raise money and
awareness for canine cancer and comparative oncology research.

So, you see, even though I am very sad on the thought of what cancer has done to so many of our loved ones in the past, I want to make a difference for the future. I am proudly going to Puppy Up! tomorrow with those lost in my heart and those we will help in the future on my mind. The Puppy Up! walk in Raleigh
is a few weeks before most happen on Nov 6th across the country. Please

Does Wayne Brady Have to Choke a Puppy?

Ah the joys... Errr scratch that.  Argh the pains of raising a puppy.   Most days I’m just tolerating Indiana and the others I’m trying not to strangle him.  He’s a little terrorist and it’s like I’m harboring the youngest member of Al Qaeda.  If God didn’t make them cute and sweetly smelling...

Okay, okay… he’s not that bad but as Patty in Cincinnati astutely observed, emotionally I am keeping Indy at arm’s length.  That was also the case when Hudson was a puppy so perhaps it’s because I don’t fall in love easily or that’s the natural arc of life’s circle.  I am uncertain.

Hudson has been my absolute priority these past months following Murphy’s death even after the adoption of the new puppy, but it’s time to put my pack back in order and that’s a tall one. 

When I envisioned the Finding Fuzzybutt Four blog I hoped not only would we be able to find a brother for Hudson but some good homes for other dogs, too.  And from there we could share all aspects of the puppy’s development since in large part I am having to re-learn being a Papi all over again. 

Honestly, I don’t know what the hell I’m doing with him but admitting you have a problem is the first step.  Starting next week, Sheila and I are proud to announce a series of weekly ‘puppy podcasts’ that’ll cover all aspects of what I need to know to raise Indy right - from training to nutrition, and toys to treats, and pack integration. 

Every week I’ll be talking with experts on different topics that we’re encountering and the podcasts will only be hosted here on Finding Fuzzybutt Four.  Stay posted…

"no" to such a pretty lady we allow it. Yasmin is doing great and you

Goliath is a 6-7 yr old boy that weighs 115lbs and he is thin! Goliath is well
mannered, gets along with dogs, cats and kids. Goliath was found as stray and
his owner didn't come looking for him. He was so badly matted and covered in
fleas and ticks that he had to be shaved to give him some relief. Goliath loves
attention from human friends and will snuggle in your hand for love. Goliath is
looking for a wonderful family that will give him what he missed in the

2. FOSTER! This is a temporary commitment that gives all needy
dogs the time needed to find the loving home they deserve. Your generous
decision to foster can literally mean the difference between whether they live

3. Donate! In upwards of $8/day, Boarding isn't cheap. A
donation of just $25 can give all boarded dogs 3 whole days to find the home
they have been waiting their whole life for. Vet bills. These can sometimes run
into the thousands per dog. Every penny counts when it comes to vet

Roman is a distinguished older gentleman who prefers
laidback female companions. He wants to be the king of his castle, but he is
not opposed to having a queen. Roman is what we call an "experienced"
dog.He came into rescue after fending for himself for a long time...oh, the
stories he could tell if he could speak! Roman walks gently on the leash and he
loves all people. He is looking for a retirement home and would prefer a home

Wonderful 10 year old senior pair. Zeke and Daisy are as
sweet and huggable as they come and they say the more hugs and attention the
better. We would really like to keep them together since they have been
together since youngsters and are quite bonded. They get along beautifully
except they do have to be separated for meals which takes about 5 minutes twice
a day as they both have great appetites and finish their meals without delay.

Great Pyrenees: An adoptable dog in Bloomington, IL

Jake is an extremely tall and lanky 8 year old male. He is a
well socialized and friendly guy. Loves to lean against your legs when being
petted and hugged. Jake came to us severely underweight and weak with muscle
atrophy in his rear legs. With good nutrition and exercise, Jake has come a
long way. He now weighs a healthy 110 pounds. He still has some minor
instability in his hock joints due to poor confirmation (structure), which give
him a rather funny looking gait, but it does not hinder his running the yard
with long, loping strides and a big Pyr smile on his face. Jake has proven to
get along well with female dogs but is not tolerant of any other dogs coming
anywhere near his food, and that would need to be taken into account if living
with another dog. It is unknown how he is with cats, but this is something that
can be tested if needed. Jake loves attention, and it is suspected that he
would be quite the cuddly couch potato when he finds his special home. Please

Gwen is a 9 year old sweet, well behaved girl and would be a
wonderful companion for that special person who wants an only pet with some
minor special needs (medication for low thyroid). She lost her right eye to a
tumor, but we think her "permanent wink" makes her even more special.
Gwen really deserves to spend her senior years being someone's baby as opposed
to one of many in a kennel situation. She is a people dog and loves everyone
she meets. Gwen was an unclaimed stray so we don't know her history but she
gives every indication of having been a much loved, well trained family member
at some time in her life. We hope to find a new family for her who will give
her the love and care she deserves in her mature years. Gwen rides great in the
car, walks nicely on leash and is clean and neat in her kennel, but she will
need to be an only pet. She loves her big pillow bed and will faithfully guard

Parker Has An Amazing Story!

9/13/11:
Parker had the surgery $1064.00. Now he has to have a nasolacrimal flush every
4 to 5 days (depending how it falls as can't do it on a weekend) This will be
"for as long as it takes" to clear up. This could be for 4 months
which would be 24 to 28 flushes. EACH flush is an additional $78. He has had 3
flushes already and another scheduled for this Friday. With his surgery,
Penny's surgery and a failed emergency surgery which Shelby did not make it, Ozark Dogs Rescue is
in major financial trouble and our personal finances are tapped beyond
recovery. PLEASE, if you can help...

8/20/11: Parker needs
eye surgery. He has already had 3 over the past 18 months, but this surgery
requires a specialist to save the eye and bring him relief from 2 years of
suffering. Any amount of donations towards this $1000 expense would be greatly

Parkers adoptability
status is being retired. He has been here at Ozark Dogs 2 years. It would be
too hard on this old boy to re-adjust to a new family at this point so he will
just live out his life here as part of our sanctuary.

4/5/11: Parker just
celebrated his 18th month here. No cake and ice cream, and no forever home.
Instead his day was spent at the vets having x-rays for what turned out to be
re-injury of an old torn tendon in the knee from long ago. X-rays also showed
he had once been shot as the pellets were still in his hip! He also underwent
another entropian surgery and some eye lash removal. He looks as pathetic as he
must feel. Because he is so sweet, he was not taken into a run to recover. He
got to stay in the room with the vets. When he woke up, he went over and nudged
the vet ever so softly with his nose. I think if Dr. Rob was not so busy, he'd
adopt Parker. He has a real special fondness for this old boy. During his time
here, Parker has been such a sweet boy and the most agreeable dog of the bunch.
He had his first entropian surgery about 6 months ago. He also has "dry
eye" which is easily treated with a few drops of artificial tears 3 to 4
times a day. When his eye bothers him, he comes and nudges me to put the drops
in! He is such a great patient. Parker wants to be with his people but he also
enjoys outside time. He will patrol the yard and alert to strangers with a deep
'woof'. He likes to sun himself on the deck or under a tree if weather is nice,
but too hot and he is near the AC. When he senses a storm, he is on the bed
snuggling for protection or trying to get behind the toilet to hide. He is
afraid of gun shots and fireworks too. He loves long walks, car rides and being
brushed. He is good when his eye medication is put on and will also come to
have his drool wiped from his chin.

Ozark Dogs Rescue only
adopts to companion homes where the dog will have inside privileges. A 5' fence
is usually required but there are exceptions. Adoption donations vary and may
be flexible. Our primary goal is to get the very best home for each dog.

and his house mate Macie are in need of a foster home due to their owner
remarrying and the travel that she and her new husband will be doing. Ivan is
afraid of camera flashes, so he is a little scared in these photos. He is an 8
year old boy who is fine with all other animals and people too. He is truly is
a gentle giant. Ivan is housebroken, and does not need to be crated when you
are gone. He is a very sweet and lovable boy. Ivan will be placed as an inside
pet with outside privileges to a secure visibly fenced yard. Pyrs do not do
well with wireless fencing. We recommend obedience training for all newly
adopted pyrs, to help you create a special bond with you and your new friend,
and so you have a well behaved canine. Great Pyrenees
are willing to learn, but are not as eager to comply with commands as much as
other breeds. They are bred to be independent thinkers. If you are interested
